The Circle Ensemble Theatre Company
and The winterville Center
Are pleased to present
second sundays
new play reading series
In effort to fulfill our mission to challenge the intellect, stimulate emotions, reawaken imaginations and encourage dialogue, our Second Sundays: New Play Reading Series will help break the boundaries of age, gender and race, and focus on the new voices of our community.
Readings are the second Sunday of each month at 3:00 in the Winterville Center.
BACKGROUND
2nd Sundays is a regular series of play readings on the second Sunday of each month. These informal readings by volunteer actors are a service to playwrights who are ready for feedback in order to fine-tune their work. They also give producers an inside track to see theatre artists in the community. Gatherings are held on afternoons in the Winterville Auditorium. After readings, we facilitate a talk-back and solicit impressions and constructive criticism about the play itself. The motivation behind the ongoing project is to facilitate new-play development.
CHANGES & CLARIFICATIONS
WHO: Nance Daniels will be coordinating 2nd Sundays, which includes reading and distributing scripts for evaluation, connecting directors to new works, assisting with casting, and facilitating critical discussions.
WHEN: Still held on the second Sunday of each month, the time will move up to 3 PM. Rehearsals will be arranged by directors and take place at the convenience of the cast, which will vary by project.
WHERE: Winterville Auditorium, located at 373 N Church St (unless otherwise announced)
WHAT: Our primary focus is on developing texts. Readings will remain mostly informal. We hope our community will be involved in any of the roles on any given project, but what we need consistently are script evaluators (considering scripts for readings) and audience (reading attendees willing to offer impressions and constructive criticism). In addition to new play submissions by playwrights, we will also consider suggestions for readings of established plays by directors. (For example, maybe you are a new director considering Pinter’s The Dumb Waiter but you are not quite ready to put all the moving parts together for a full production and just want to work with the language.) The ultimate decision for play selections will be made by the artistic and managing directors with advice from the literary manager.
NEW PLAYS CIRCLE ROLES
(in chronological order)
We realize that some of the most creative people in our community are busy and involved in many projects. So, we are soliciting for and suggesting different levels of commitment in the New Plays Circle.
1. Playwright: Please send your copyrighted works in .pdf for consideration to us at [email protected].
2. Script Evaluator: We need people to read one new play each month and submit a simple report to the literary department. This is one of the best positions for people interested in directing as they would be able to put their hat in the ring to direct a reading.
3. Director: Each script will have a director (who is not the playwright). This is perfect for both seasoned and aspiring directors.
4. Actor: Each script needs actors to attend approximately one rehearsal and read the script for an audience. Actors are encouraged but not obligated to give feedback.
5. Audience: Readings are open to the public, every second Sunday. We invite people with a keen interest in hearing new works to attend readings. Feedback sessions will follow.
NOW WHAT?
We hope to see you every second Sunday, at least. If you'd like to participate in any way just send an email to Nance Daniels, 2nd Sundays Coordinator, at [email protected].
We look forward to seeing you Sunday, September 9, at 3 PM in the Winterville Auditorium for a reading of Lynne Thomas’s Robin Hood and the Crown of Fire.
We charge no fees and readings are free and open to the public. Donations to cover the cost will be accepted.
